AGENDA
The presence of nitrogen (N2) in natural gas feedstocks presents significant technical and economic challenges for the Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) industry. This training examines the multifaceted impact of nitrogen on the LNG value chain, focusing on process efficiency, storage safety, and product quality. Because nitrogen has a lower boiling point than methane, its presence increases the refrigeration load and specific power consumption of liquefaction trains, often leading to production bottlenecks. Furthermore, nitrogen’s high volatility drives the generation of Boil-Off Gas (BOG) during storage and transport, complicating pressure management and increasing the risk of stratified “rollover” events. We also analyze the dilution of the heating value (calorific value) and the resulting economic penalties in global markets. Finally, the abstract reviews Nitrogen Rejection Unit (NRU) technologies—such as cryogenic distillation and integrated flash systems—as essential tools for meeting the stringent 1.0 mol% export specification while optimizing methane recovery and plant energy footprints.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Jay Anguiano serves as Chief Technology Officer with 27+ years of specialized experience in the gas processing industry. His technical expertise is focused on cryogenic design for hydrocarbon liquids recovery (NGL and LPG), Nitrogen Rejection Units (NRUs), and Small Scale LNG (ssLNG) production.
A primary or co-inventor on seven patents in NGL and NRU technologies, J has designed and/or commissioned gas processing units across North and South America, the Middle East, and Central and Southeast Asia. As CTO, he leads project development and execution across all of the company’s gas processing technologies, bringing a track record of technically sound, field-proven solutions to every engagement.
